Helicopter parents

There is a mortifying article in the New York Times about parents who still are hovering over their adult children. By hovering, I mean emailing their child's boss or calling their adult child's boss to complain about long work hours. The article by Lisa Belkin details the plight of the modern parent. They try to get their child to grow up as fast as possible, but then insist on being an intrusive part of their adult life.

I am not a parent, so I am merely speaking from the heart, not experience. The best part of your first years of real life (post college) are the mistakes. What's better than blazing your own path? What's better than honoring your parents by accomplishing a lot on your own? As an advisor, I often see (and have blogged about) parents who keep (financially) bailing out their adult children. Check my previous article here. Stop the insanity.

Maybe I will feel differently when I have children (I mean, when my wife has children. It is medically impossible for me to give birth.) Send me an email or submit a comment if you think that I am off base here.

Read the New York Times article. It will make you very uncomfortable.
